Jar Of Questions - Part 17

Did I serve in the military? Where + when? Eny special memories or close calls?
I served from June 1951 to June 1953. I went to Fort Ord in California for induction then boarded a train for Alberdeen, Maryland. Took my basic training there for 3 months then went to Atlanta, Georgia for schooling in repairing vehicle then after being home on leave for 2 weeks I went to Seattle, Washington and boarded a big troop ship and sailed across the ocean to Japan. I went to a 2 week school there on poison gas warfare and got to enjoy my 1st earth quake. At least I knew what they felt like. After schooling in Japan I boarded another boat for Korea. We got off the boat in Pusan, Korea and boarded a train and road it up near the battle line and went by truck to our assigned co. I was assigned to the 7th Infantry Div. and assigned to the 707 Ord Battalion repairing jeep, trucks, and half tracks. I enjoyed the work and the company. We could hear the fitting going on and at night from on the hill where we set and watched movies we could see the tracer bullets + shells going out and coming in up on line. Across the road from us the helicopter was bringing in the wounded at the hospital and there was a runway for airplanes to land and fly out the badly wounded + damaged to Japan. I spent 13 months in Korea and enjoyed the people + the country and the experience of what we had to do. I went back to Japan 2 different times on vacation or R+$ they called it - rest + recuperation. It was good to see Japan and the people, there shops and the things they made. I sent home 2 sets of dishes of dishes and some other misc things. In Korea there was a lot of damage, wholes towns destroyed, rail yards + many trained destroyed, buildings + homes + farms with there layers of rice paddys ruined. The army had camps made in a lot of the area as the South Korea had camps there also near the line. I was happy when my time was up and we went to the ship in Korea and went to Japan, stayed there about a week and boarded a big troop ship for California and ended up back at Fort Ord to receive my release papers. My brother Heber was there at Fort Ord so I got to visit him for a day before I left on the bus for Mesa and home. I didn't get my discharge from the army then because we had to stay in the army 4 more years in the active reserve due to the war still going in Korea. I got to go back to Fort Ord 4 more times for active summer training for 2 weeks each summer and once a month training in Phx. Now when that totle 6 yrs was up I sure was glad and happy to get my discharge and release. No I don't think I was ever really in danger. But going to breakfast at times we could could count the dead laying in the tent where they were brought in at night. There feet sticking out from under the cover with a tag tied to their big toe. (I am thankful for a safe return)
