Jar of Questions - Part 6
Tell about our marriage. When, where, by whom, + reception.
Our marriage was June 8th 1956 in the Ariz. Temple. Pres. Pearce did the marriage + sealing. We came out of the temple and took a few pictures and then we went to Prescott for the first night of our honeymoon. We got a little white motel just on the south side of Prescott. The second night we went to the Grand Canyon and got a cottage there in the park - a log cabin one as I remember. The third night we went and stayed in Payson in a motle there. Then we came home and had our reception in the back yard of Joans home (the Whitton home). They used the lattise work big heart that the Coons had for us to stand in front of and decorated it with flowers and a table for gifts and a table for refreshments. The family and ward members was the main one's there. They had a nice short program. We settled into an appartment that belonged to the Karl Reeds on N Center Street. An upstairs apartment that was nice enough. Nione + Roger Larson was living in the down stairs apartment. Sence we was building our own home on the family farm on a lot that Papa gave us we did not change membership to a different ward but 3 months later moved into our own home at 421 N Clement in a couple of the rooms we finished and than we finished the rest of the house. We borrowed $7500.00 to build the home with a $63.00 a month payment and we thought that was a big payment. We had a man come and check on us while we were building it because somebody turned in a complaint that we was building a duplex. We said no way - we were just building a 4 bed room home for the dozen kids that Joan was going to have someday. Joan and I started building the house before we was married and it was just ready to put the roofing on when we did get married. Our neighbor Casper Nicoll worried about that sence there was no tar paper covering the 1x12 boards. But we did get it covered + the shingels on. Bishop Burnham + Harris helped cut the supporting 2/6 board for the roof support + we nailed them on + cut the rest. They were a great help + good friends. And our bishops at diff. times. Bishop Stan Burnham was our bishop when we got married and called us to the job of dance directors in the ward.
What do I remember as a teenager? My dreams? My goals?
This is a hard one. I just wanted to be alive - to be accepted - to have a measure of happyness - to enjoy each day and see others have the same. I enjoyed my teenage days. Papa + Mama was easy to live with and I enjoyed helping on the farm. I didn't have what you would call close friends except for Thyrl Lisonbee, and I really didn't have too much time for him. I guess my family was the best friends I had and needed. At school Bob Klien + Jim Martinez was the closest there. They were the ones I ditched high school with and spent the longest day of my life with. Believe me - its not fun to ditch school. It was so boring that day setting on the ditch bank watching the water go by. We rode out there on there Cushman motor scooters. My dreams was to become a automechanic and get a job, have a nice car - not nissesally a new one but a nice one - to find a nice girl someday but I really wasn't interested that much during school. I did like to observe them though. I did enjoy my job and work for Doice Shults at T+S Motors, the Studebaker dealer and the freedom I had there. Always plenty to do no matter where you looked and I enjoyed the trips to get cars + trucks and seeing California + the ocean for the 1st time and flying in a plane for the 1st time. No I can't complain about my teen age years - they were simple but enjoyable - even my brothers + sisters were the greatest.
(1945 to 1949) Did I got to college or take vocational training? What, when and where?
No! I did not go to college and I didn't want to go either. I really never did like school that much. It wasn't that bad but I enjoyed being out there and liked my freedom - I enjoyed working and doing things - I liked being busy. I did take automechanics at the old Mesa High School on Center Street. Carl Eaves was my teacher. I took a half day of regular school and a half day of automechanics class. Mr Eaves was a good teacher and later when we opened the garage (Clement Motors) he brought his vehicles there for us to work on them. I took shop there at Mesa High in 1947-1949. I also got to work out in different shops and the first was Walt Arnetts garage on S. Robson Street and then at T+S Motors - the Studebaker dealer. I really enjoyed it best there and stayed there until we opened Clement Motors with Elvin in 1955 - at Clement Motors. I really did get a education and Ive still get one every day - although its been fun at time + hard at times. I really enjoyed owning our own buisness and Elvin was OK to be a partner with. But I did learn more by doing then in the class room although the class room, at school - whatever the vocation may be is very important also.
I did get a certifict for graduating from auto mechanics from Mesa High School (1949 June). The Mesa High School principal would come down to T+S and check with Doice Shults to see how I was doing and make sure I was doing OK. Harvey Taylor he was real happy to see I turned out OK. When we started our own garage we got to work on his car as well as Carl Eaves car, my shop teacher. We were all happy things turned out OK for Elvin + I starting Clement Motors and Papa + Mama letting us build on the Clement farm in exchange for a new home for them. But Grandma Maud Clement died shortly after we moved them into the new house across the street from Don + Joans house at 421 N Clement.
