Jar of Questions - Part 1

I have been asked by my daughter Emily to write my history and she has given me a bottle full of questions on pieces of paper to write my answers or thoughts about each.

How did your grandparents live?
I never did get to know my grandparents They had already passed on and went to Heaven by the time I came along on Sept 24, 1930.

What was their home like?
I believe their house was the same as my own parents - very special with high ceilings, 2 main rooms, kitchen and living room, with rooms and porch around those rooms. The kitchen had a big wood burning stove for cooking and the living room had a pot bellied stove for heating in the winter that was moved out for more room in the summer. The kitchen had a big old wood table with benchs and chairs around it where we ate our meals. The rooms was lite up with kerosene lamps. The front porch on the east side of the house was high and open and when we were kids and visitors came we would sit out on the porch and visit since it was the coolest area. Later when the tamerick trees in the rear got big, (west side) we would set under these trees and also would sleep at night under them.

Did the house have certain smells?
My mother was always bakeing something in the old wood stove in the kitchen and there was always the great smell of bakeing home made bread that you could smell in the house, especially the kitchen and at very special times, a cake or cookies. But since Mama baked and made all the bread we ate I'll always remember the smell of the bread bakeing and when you got that slice of warm bread with the apricot jam that Mama made it was delicious. Especially on the heal of the loaf. I loved it.

Did the house have special looks?
It was old. I thought it was the oldest in the neighbor hood, but it wasn't. It was a typical old farm house where 11 children grew up. It was on the corner of N. Extension Rd and 4th Street later called University Dr. It was on 20 acres of farm land where Papa raised cotton and had milk cows. The house had 2 rooms made of red brick and lumber. The east side had a front porch that was open and just right to sit on. The north side had a screened in sleeping porch with canvas flaps that opened for cooling in the summer and closed for warmth in the winter. The west side had the kitchen and pantry that was built on later and bathroom and shower also that Heber made from what used to be sleeping rooms for the girls. After Papa built on 2 bedrooms of cement blocks on the south side. This addition was built over the old family well. At that time, the house seemed big and served us well as a family and we were happy there. Papa worked hard to make ends meet and provide and Mama sacrificed and put in many hours for us as a family - never complaining.

Do I remember eny special feelings as a child?
Not really. I kept having a dream that I climbed up on this tower and I fell off but before I would hit the bottom I would wake up crying. I remember having that dream over and over but finally grew out of it when I got older. But growing up I felt safe and secure at home, no fear or frustrations that I can remember.
